英文中還有一個單字 old（聽發音）也常被拿來表是古代的意思，例如 old times 就是古代、舊時光或很久之前，不過 old 泛指過去的，時間不一定是幾千年前，就算是幾年前或幾十年前都可以用 old time 來表示，所以如果要提真正的那種幾千年前的古代，用 ancient 會比較精準一點，舉例來說，金字塔或人面獅身象這些數千年前古代埃及文明的建築都屬於 ancient architecture，而比較近期如幾百年前的城堡或莊園建築就屬於 old architecture。
